This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12S 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

I've always been a fan of Panasonic's Optical Image Stabilizers on their Lumix line of cameras. The DMC-FX12 was quite the steal at under $200. Very compact camera without sacrificing image quality (at least not too much). There have been testimonies stating that the images produced from the DMC-FX12 are soft, but you can fix that by changing the color mode to "vivid" and presto, sharper images. The only gripe I have with this compact performer is that anything from ISO 800 and higher provides very noisy images. Most of the low light shots I've taken (minus the flash with color mode set to 'natural') were acceptable, but quite noisy. This camera has a quality Leica lens which helps contribute to some crisp images. Other than that, the flash is decent and under normal lighting conditions, you get some pretty darn good images (the image stabilizer makes a huge difference). This is a point-and-shoot camera and people tend to expect SLR quality images from a point-and-shoot camera. I have yet to come across a p&s shooter that comes anywhere close to SLR quality. As for the DMC-FX12, it's compact, great for point-and-shoot casual shooting, and worth every penny. I was in debate of whether to get this shooter or the DMC-FX30 but I wasn't about to shell out another extra $100 for a difference of 7mm of focal length between the 2 shooters. I chose the DMC-FX12 due to price and the image quality.

This review is from: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12S 7.2MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)

Light carry weight and small size were near the top of my "must have" features for a new camera; I wanted something that I would grab every day, put in a pocket, and not worry about. I have a digital SLR but carrying around every day is a bit much.

After looking at Canon and Nikon pocket cameras I decided on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12. (I did on-line research, then went to my local camera store where I've been buying gear for 30 years. Their recommendations are generally spot-on. BTW - I paid a few bucks more at the camera store; buying on Amazon would have been less expensive. But since I spent some time in the store with the clerk, I felt it not right to use his expertise and then purchase elsewhere).

The FX12 is quite small - easily fits in a dress shirt pocket or front slacks pocket. (Jean pockets maybe not so much, they tend to be tighter and might damage the camera). The camera is also quite light, although perhaps a bit heavier than it looks.

The Leica lens was a major selling point for me. Leica glass reputation is second-to-none. However, the focal length could be just a tad longer for my taste. This camera is great for wide angle shots (group photos, etc.) but grabbing a telephoto shot means going to electronically enhanced zoom and, even with a Leica lens, that has inherit limitations.

Close up shots (such as flowers) come out very nicely indeed, even for such a photographer as myself.

Construction of the camera seems...delicate. Flimsy is too strong a term, but "delicate" seems to fit. Of course the controls are small by design, which is great, but the battery/card cover isn't all that substantial. However the camera seems to ride happily in whichever pocket I have dropped it into, and the construction is not such that would make one concerned that the machine will be crunched in the carrying. Perhaps because it is so small...it just seems delicate to me.

The battery, as far as I can determine (someone PLEASE tell me if I got this wrong!) can't be charged in the camera. Battery life seems good - I've not run it down yet. However I would rarely, if ever, use the camera extensively at one go. If I know I'm going out for a shoot I'd take a DSLR. So you might look to others for recommendations on battery life. More important to me is how long the battery will keep a charge while the camera is in my pocket. I don't want to pull out the camera to find it's gone dead sitting. After being toted around for a week, taking the odd (in every sense of the word <g) photo, playing with the lens and camera settings, the battery was still showing a complete charge.

I can't comment on the software that came with the camera, as I use Photoshop Elements. However I've used card readers in XP and Vista computers without a problem in retrieving images.

I've not noticed that the images are particulary soft, but it may be a result of the images I've taken. More experience may tell a different tale.

Quality-wise I've had no issues with the images. Composition errors are not the fault of the camera ;-)

The image stabilazition does seem to have a positive influence on low light shots. The flash is, as one would expect from a small pocket camera, limited in range.

There is no viewing port on the FX12, just the viewing glass on the back of the camera. After spending a lifetime of looking through ports (both rangefinder and SLR) I'm having some difficulty in holding the camera to get my shot - I think one loses something in support when one has to hold the camera away from one's body when shooting. It appears that many manufacturers are taking this design road. On the bright side it does cut down on the profile size of the machine.

I can't comment on the noise factor at higher ASA values; I've not had cause to make those types of shots yet. The bottom line is, of course, always the image and I've been quite satisfied with the quality of the images I've made with this machine. However, I've not made any 8x10 (or larger) prints yet, and there may be hidden faults that will appear only on larger prints.

Since I truly drop this thing daily into my shirt or pants pocket I had some concerns about scratching the viewing glass. I found a Delkin "eFilm" shade which adds nearly no weight to the camera (it does add about 1/4 of an inch to the depth of the camera)and protects the viewing glass and also gives protection from direct sunlight when used outdoors. It's removable, but I've found it doesn't interfere with keeping the camera "pocketable".

Other than a bit more lens reach the only other thing on my "WIBCI" list (Wouldn't It Be Cool If) would be manual settings. However it's a point and shoot with autmatic controls (although there are a number of scenes from which to choose!) so one can't gripe about lack of manual controls.

Start up time is quite fast for this type of camera - much faster than my Kodak 443. Shutter lag isn't b...

This review is from: Samsung LN46D550 46-Inch 1080p 60Hz LCD HDTV (Black)

This TV is absolutely stunning. I was actually waiting for the C9000 to come out, but that TV's price is way over the limit. I found out that this TV which is the next step down and actually has the exact same technology as the C9000 minus the touchscreen remote (which can be bought seperately) and the slim profile, not a big deal considering the TV already looks beautiful and is half the price or less then a C9000!

In all honesty, I think this TV has one of the nicest pictures I've ever seen. One example is the pin-point dimming, which has garnered a lot of criticsm and skeptisism. I have seen the production TV model live and I must tell you, I think it's better then local-dimming and I'll tell you why... Unless there is a new panel that is made to fix the local-dimming "halo affect", this is currently the only way to get outradgeous contrast levels without that problem. The pin-point dimming on this TV dramatically lowers the dark spots on the screen in certain area's without a halo affect and actually goes completely pitch black when watching movies with dark screens just like a local-dimming TV. I think this TV actually excels at the dimming part over a local-dimming TV because it creates supurb black levels without any halo affects. That's a huge deal for me. Next is the color accuracy of this panel, I think the whites and colors on this TV are probably better then I've ever seen. Sure Plasma's can sometimes have better color temperatures, but they will not pop out of the screen with ambience like this TV shows. This TV is sharp looking and beautiful and it displays wonderful 3D and High-definition like never before.

Last, but not least... this tv is LOADED with features, easily making it one of the most feature rich TV's there is on the market. It's completely wireless, has 4-hdmi conenctions, has internet applications and streaming capabilities and best yet, it does it well! I have done a lot of research and have compared this TV with it's newest competitors and this one is it. Don't just take my word for it, go see it for yourselves and you'll just see what I am talking about.

This review is from: Samsung LN46D550 46-Inch 1080p 60Hz LCD HDTV (Black)

I just got the TV a couple of weeks a go and decided to post my first review ever on Amazon, as well this is the largest purchase I've made. This is my first LCD purchase in a while, I've had a Pioneer Plasma that I've loved forever, but just moved to Boston and left the Pioneer back home. The picture is extremly clear, almost too clear, sometimes I feel like the TV shows are live action TV, which takes a bit to get used too. The features seem great. I read through some of the comments, I'm pretty sure the C8000 doesn't have WIFI, as it wasn't an option, but I had ethernet right behind the TV so I didn't dig super deep. The Internet options are great, can't wait to try netflix out. The Yahoo gadget bar is cool and the Internet TV seem great, first time I've had these options on a TV.

I watched the masters in 3D, pretty cool, but your eyes get tired pretty quick, active 3D makes your eyes work more than passive 3d IMHO. I'm stuck with crappy comcast in my new building, so no 1080P coming through for other channels. I did the 3D combo and got monsters vs aliens. Wife and I watched a bit of it to check out the 3D. Way better quality than the Masters in 3D, but to be honest when I remember watching HDTV for the first time versus Standard TV, that leap was way bigger than from HDTV to 3DTV, maybe when more content comes out. I was hoping to get Avatar 3D, but those jerks are going to wait a year before releasing it. But atleast Comcast has the 3D Channel, maybe they will do more events in the future.

TV is beautiful, nice and thin. One comment about the C9000 it won't support the pin-point dimming, so the C8000 is Samsungs best picture TV. That touchscreen remote can be purchased, but it won't allow you to watch TV on the remote with the C8000 like the C9000 does.

Setup was simple, haven't really dug deep into the features. Sound is OK, but then again I'm used to my home theatre. Does extremely well with the glare and I haven't mounted it on the wall and I'm using the standard stand, comes in handy to turn it slighty to get the glare from the sun out of the picture.

One more thing the 3D mode has some ghosting, I wonder if that will be fixed over time. I do think it is worse when your eyes get tired though. I don't mind the glasses, but I wouldn't wear them in public ;-)

If you are getting a new TV, go for this one, don't be put off by the 3D as a gimic, all TVs are going to ship with them, I don't think you are paying a premimum for the HD. I still love my Pioneer Plasma, the thing is 6 years old and still has a great picture, but this is way better than the two Sharp LCDs I own, espicially the one I dropped and broke the screen on.

This review is from: Samsung LN46D550 46-Inch 1080p 60Hz LCD HDTV (Black)

Length:: 5:32 Mins

If you have read any of the other reviews you probably have noticed a general theme - the Samsung C8000 has a picture that is unmatched. I know that sounds like hyperbole, but in this case it really is the truth. prior to purchasing I had spent about 6 months going to box stores and staring at various televisions. In all of that time I decided that the Samsung LED's were in class by themselves. At long last I was ready to make the purchase and I decided to order from Amazon.com in fact the price was attractive enough that I went ahead and ordered the Samsung UN46C8000 46" 1080p 3D LED TV, 1080p Resolution, 3D Technology, 3D HyperReal Picture Engine, Touch of Color Design, Kit Includes 2 Pairs of 3D Glasses, BD-C5900 1080p 3D Blu-ray DVD Player, Dig Pro HDMI Cable.

Wow.

In all of my travels to box stores I never came across a picture that was as good as the C8000. Nothing is even close.

A few of my notes

- I have never used the television in 3D, and I doubt if I will until sometime next year. To be honest the 3D accessories are too expensive and the available content is too sparse. So why would I buy a 3D television? Well for the price of the Samsung C8000 I am able to get a 3D television for the price of a different mid-range television. However, with the C8000 I get the industry's best picture and the expandability of 3D for a later date. Really how can you lose?

- The picture is both bright and crisp. The detail is beyond belief. The best way to describe it is that the picture resembles a professional photo (print) in a high quality frame.

- 4 HDMI inputs - Please note that 3D televisions require high-speed HDMI cables. Take my advice and save yourself some $$$ by purchasing Amazon...

Hamilton Beach 10-Cup Stainless Steel Electric Kettle

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 10-Cup Stainless Steel Electric Kettle

To add: it does heat water quickly. Makes a neat gurgling sound like a dragon waking when you heat a full pot and a to add to the effect a squirt of steam comes out when the water is done. Switch lights up with an orange glow when you flip it down to turn on. Tested temp with a kitchen probe when flushing with clean water as the instructions recommend, each time it was 206 degrees F (which is almost perfect to brew coffee.) Construction is all (well mostly all)- stainless steel inside but there is a hole for the plastic viewing window. Must heat at least .5 liter (~2 mugs) of water min. Base is clad in plastic on exterior and cool to touch. The heating base (plug part) was covered in some kind of residue when opened, although it was easily cleaned, odd though....

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 10-Cup Stainless Steel Electric Kettle

What a great electric kettle! I bought this for my office because I don't have access to a kitchen. It is wonderful! It heats up quickly, is incredibly easy to use and looks spiffy. I would definitely buy this again. My only complaint is that the cord is short, but as it's a straight 2 prong plug, you can easily use an extension cord if necessary....

This review is from: Hamilton Beach 10-Cup Stainless Steel Electric Kettle

Other than the funky on/off switch, which I am now used to, the kettle works well. I only use filtered water so I don't have to worry about scaling. A liter takes about five minutes to heat up. I have used it everyday for over a month. Will report back with any adverse comments....

Earth's Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Baby Wipes

Size: 80 count Refill

Soft cloth-like texture

Gentle enough for hands and face

Ships in Certified Frustration-Free Packaging

Introducing… New Earth's Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Wipes from Earth's Best - the #1 baby brand in natural foods. These wipes have a hypo-allergenic, alchohol-free natural formula that contains Aloe Vera and Vitamin E. Each thick and comfortable soft wipe gently cleans, soothes and softens baby's skin keeping it feeling fresh and clean. The easy to use pop-up cover is designed to keep wipes continuously moist.

This review is from: Earth\'s Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Baby Wipes

I used to buy Kirkland Signature (Costco) wipes and Huggies wipes. However, upon research from EWG's website, I decided to try the more natural and less toxic brands. So I bought Earth's Best, Seventh Generation, and Tushies, just to compare.

Size: Earth's Best is slightly larger than Seventh Generation and Tushies. If you like generous sizes, Earth's Best is the winner.

Thickness: Earth's Best is similar to Seventh Generation. Tushies is the thinnest. But none of the three brands is as thick as Huggies.

Texture: Tushies is subtly printed with ducks and stars. These prints increase friction so it is easier to remove dried poop that sticks to baby's bottom. Seventh Generation and Earth' Best do not have prints on them. They feel smoother on the skin. But on the other hand, they do not remove dried poop as effectively due to the lack of friction. More friction can be good or bad, depending on your perspective. One user commented that Tushies felt like sand paper. It was exaggerated. But Tushies does feel rougher on the skin. Between Seventh Generation and Earth' Best, Seventh Generation has more of a fabric feeling, while Earth' Best feels smoother.

Water Retention: inside the plastic bags that come with the wipes, Tushies wipes feel very moist. However, once I transported the wipes to the wipe warmer, they become dry. Their thin texture does not help the wipes to absorb/maintain water. Seventh Generation and Earth' Best are better at retaining moisture.

Breakability: it is very annoying to have wipes broken into pieces when you pull them out of the wipe warmer. Huggies and Tushies both break. Seventh Generation, Earth' Best, and Kirkland never do.

Overall, none of baby wipes I tried are perfect. They all have pros and cons. However, if I am going to choose one, I will go with Earth's Best for its size, texture, moistness and the fact that it does not break easily....

This review is from: Earth\'s Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Baby Wipes

We have found this to be the best wipe around. Made in the USA! Generous and "Cloth like". They get the job done with less waste; On an outing, I can do a quick wipe of our 3 kiddos face and hands (with 1wipe) without it shredding, falling apart or particles left everywhere! You can really feel the Glycerin, so they are soft and very moist. I find the resealable tape works great... I have not had a package dry out, therefore I don't even use the refill tub any longer.

The package boasts:

*Chlorine free

*Unscented

*Hypoallergenic

*With Aloe Vera and Vitamin E

*Natural lotion

The ingredient panel:

Purified water=skin cleanser

Veggie derived glycerin=moisturizer, skin friendly humectant

Alkyl Poly glycoside=combased surfactant

Aloe Vera=heals, softens and smoothes

Citric acid=keeps PH level down

Vitamin E=Antioxidant or protective agent

Sodium Hydroxymethyl glycinate=broad spectrum antimicrobial

(like amino acid it keeps yeast and mold bateria at bay)

I do not read anywhere what they are made from nor that they are biodegradable, I am unsure why.

[...]

All this being said, in our household they have become a favorite, not just for happy bums!!

FYI-I also highly recommend their diapers.

Earth's Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Baby Wipes Refills, 80-Count Packages (Case of 12)(960 Wipes)

Earth's Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Diapers, Size 4, 33-37 Lbs. (Case of 120)...

This review is from: Earth\'s Best TenderCare Chlorine Free Baby Wipes

They are thick and fabric-like, which makes them very good for cleaning. I also like the less toxic ingredients and haven't had any problems with rashes or anything. However, I highly doubt they are particularly biodegradable, which bothers me since I use cloth diapers and in general try to use environmentally friendly products. I have accidently put them in the washing machine before with the diapers and the wipe was still fully intact after a wash and dry cycle. Also, they are VERY wet and sudsy - works ok for older babies or big messes, but when my baby was a newborn I always found myself having to grab a towel or something to dry her bottom after using the wipes so she wouldn't have a wet "soapy" bottom. One other comment - their wipe tub SUCKS! We have several of them, and the lids NEVER stay shut, they frequently dispense multiple wipes at a time or the wipes fall in and it's hard to grab them back out without removing the whole lid. You'd be better off just dispensing them from the refill pack directly, or using another brand's more useful tub....
